Most people love coconuts. This incredibly versatile fruit is perfect for creating delicious dishes as well as DIY skincare and haircare products. But did you know that coconuts are a no-waste fruit? Every part can be utilized, offering you countless benefits!
Digital creator Dr. Shilpa Arora recently shared on Instagram, “From its versatile uses to the powerful lauric acid in its kernel that boosts brain activity, the coconut is truly a blessing. Whether it’s the oil for healthy hair or coconut water for natural electrolytes, it has so much to offer.”
In a conversation with Subah Saraf, co-founder of Satvic Movement, we explored the many ways to make the most of coconuts.
“The coconut is truly a gift from nature. It’s remarkable how every part is utilized, leaving almost nothing to waste. In Sanskrit, it’s called Shreephal, meaning ‘God’s fruit,’ and there’s a reason for that,” Saraf noted.
According to her, the soft flesh inside, known as malai, is both rich and creamy. “It can be enjoyed as a healthy snack or added to milkshakes and desserts. As for its water, it’s nature’s refreshing drink, packed with life-giving nutrients,” she added.
The tough outer shell can be transformed into beautiful bowls, utensils, or decorative items. The husk, often discarded, is surprisingly versatile and can be used to make ropes, doormats, and brushes, as well as padding for mattresses.
Saraf explained that coir can be fashioned into nests, used for thatching roofs, or utilized as padding and stuffing for various hollow items.
