The alleged assault of a 17-year-old girl in Sivasagar, Assam, last week has sparked significant unrest, focusing the anger on “non-Assamese” business owners in the town. The incident, which reportedly occurred on August 13, has led to protests and heightened tensions between locals and “outsiders.” The proscribed militant group ULFA(I) has even issued threats against those considered “outsiders.”

In response to the escalating situation, representatives of Marwari groups, who are identified as the accused in the assault case, publicly apologized in front of a state cabinet minister on Tuesday. The apology came after the arrest of two individuals under the provisions of the BNSS (Black Market and Smuggling Act) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

The accused, both local businessmen from the Marwari community, have intensified local resentment against non-Assamese residents and particularly against non-Assamese business owners in Sivasagar. This case has not only stirred communal tensions but also spotlighted ongoing issues of identity and belonging within the region.
