A Step Toward Restoring Democracy: Parties Praise J&K Election Dates
Political parties across Jammu and Kashmir on Friday welcomed the Election Commission’s announcement of a three-phase Assembly election schedule, starting September 18. They view this as a crucial move toward “restoring democracy” in the region after six years under Central rule.
Former J&K Chief Minister and National Conference (NC) leader Omar Abdullah lauded the decision, noting that this is the first time since 1987 that elections will be completed in such a short span. “Der aaye durust aaye (Better late than never),” Abdullah remarked. “On behalf of the National Conference, I can assure you that we have been preparing for this moment and will immediately commence our ground campaign.”
The announcement has been seen as a significant development by local parties, signaling a return to democratic processes and local governance. This election is anticipated to reshape the political landscape of J&K and address long-standing concerns about representation and autonomy in the region.
