Why Delhi L-G Chose Minister Kailash Gahlot to Unfurl the Tricolour on Independence Day

Delhi Lt-Governor V K Saxena nominated Delhi Home Minister Kailash Gahlot to unfurl the national flag on Independence Day, in the absence of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who is currently in jail related to the CBI’s excise policy case. Kejriwal had earlier indicated in a letter from jail that Atishi would be the one to unfurl the flag. The question now being asked is, why was Gahlot chosen instead?

Kailash Gahlot, the MLA from Najafgarh, became a minister in 2017, replacing Kapil Mishra, who later joined the BJP after making corruption allegations against Kejriwal and former minister Satyendar Jain. Gahlot has maintained a low profile within the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the government, and is known for having Kejriwal’s trust and confidence.

In recent days, Gahlot has been seen frequently alongside Saxena at various events. On Tuesday, for instance, Saxena, as the chief guest, was accompanied by Gahlot at the foundation stone-laying ceremony for a multi-level electric bus depot. Saxena also attended a ceremony where new e-buses were inducted into Delhi’s fleet, with Gahlot present.

Leaders within AAP view Saxena’s move as an attempt to create division. “The L-G’s main motive was to show he would not follow the CM’s orders. That is why he rejected the directions and nominated Gahlot. But this will not work,” said an AAP leader, adding that Gahlot continues to focus on his duties and party responsibilities.

The AAP officially welcomed the L-G’s decision, but sources suggest that Gahlot’s nomination might also be due to his consistently cordial relationship with the L-G. “He has never been part of any name-calling or blame game. He focuses on his departments,” said another leader. Although Gahlot briefly lost the Revenue portfolio to Atishi, this was managed internally within the party. His strong background in bureaucracy and his ability to connect with officials also made him a favorable choice.

Another AAP leader noted Gahlot’s close relationship with the CM, stating, “The CM places his full trust in Gahlot and appreciates his rapport with bureaucrats. Gahlot has always been in direct communication with the CM on matters of importance, which is his preferred approach.”
