Following news of Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the Olympics and her subsequent retirement, netizens have been sharing a piece of advice from Sunil Chhetri: take cold water baths.
In a video, the football legend shares his routine: “I wake up at 6 am, do my preparation, drink warm water, and then take a cold shower. I highly recommend it. Even in Delhi winters, the colder, the better. You won’t die. It speeds up recovery and aids in weight loss. You should definitely try it.”
Curious about these claims, we consulted Dr. Muzamil Sultan Koka, Senior Registrar in Critical Care and Emergency at Marengo Asia Hospital, Gurugram. He noted that while scientific research on the effects of cold showers is limited, they can positively impact circulation, recovery, and potentially weight loss. “Cold showers also offer mental health benefits, including reduced stress and improved mood,” said Dr. Koka.
However, Dr. Manisha Arora, Director of Internal Medicine at CK Birla Hospital (R), Delhi, cautioned that sudden cold exposure can shock the system, potentially increasing heart rate and blood pressure. “Over time, the body adapts, and cold exposure may offer several benefits,” she added.
Benefits of Cold Water Baths:
- Improved Circulation: Cold water causes blood vessels to constrict and then dilate, enhancing overall circulation.
- Faster Recovery: Reduces muscle soreness and inflammation after intense physical activity.
- Boosted Immune System: Stimulates white blood cell production, strengthening the immune system.
- Increased Alertness: The shock of cold water heightens alertness and energy levels.
- Glowing Skin and Hair: Tightens pores and cuticles, improving skin and hair appearance.
- Weight Loss: Activates brown fat, which burns calories to generate heat.
- Reduced Stress: Lowers cortisol levels, reducing stress.
- Improved Mood: Increases endorphin production, boosting mood.
Risks and Considerations:
- Shock to the System: Sudden exposure can be risky for individuals with heart conditions or other health issues.
- Potential Hypothermia: Prolonged exposure to very cold water can dangerously lower body temperature.
What to Note:
Cold showers offer various health benefits, but it’s important to proceed with caution. “Consult a healthcare professional before making significant changes to your routine. Start gradually and adjust the water temperature to safely enjoy the benefits of cold showers,” advised Dr. Koka.
