A healthy heart typically maintains a steady rhythm, but what does it mean when your heartbeat takes on a rapid three-beat pattern? This unusual occurrence, known as a galloping heart rhythm, can be a concern, particularly for older adults.

Dr. Mukesh Goel, Senior Consultant in Cardio-Thoracic Surgery at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, explains that a normal heartbeat produces two distinct sounds. However, a galloping rhythm disrupts this by introducing an extra sound, creating a “thump-thump-thump” pattern. While this abnormal rhythm can affect people of all ages, its significance varies depending on the individual’s age, he noted.

Age Matters: When to Worry About a Galloping Heart

For younger individuals, certain types of galloping rhythms may be considered normal and might not require immediate concern. However, Dr. Goel emphasizes that in older adults, a galloping rhythm often signals an underlying heart issue, such as heart failure.

This rhythm can also appear after a heart attack, in individuals with uncontrolled high blood pressure that affects the heart, or in those with weakened heart muscles due to various conditions.

Beyond the Beat: Symptoms to Watch Out For

A galloping heart rhythm may not be the only sign of a problem. Dr. Goel highlights additional symptoms that could indicate a heart issue:

  • Shortness of breath, especially during physical activity
  • Unexplained fatigue or weakness
  • Swelling in the legs or ankles
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeats
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness

In severe cases, a galloping rhythm may indicate a heart struggling to meet the body’s demands, potentially leading to complications like fluid buildup in the lungs, a higher risk of abnormal heart rhythms, and even an increased chance of sudden cardiac events.

Diagnosing the Cause and Finding Solutions

If you experience a galloping heart rhythm or any associated symptoms, Dr. Goel advises consulting a doctor promptly. Further tests will be necessary to determine the underlying cause. Treatment will then focus on addressing the heart condition, which may involve medications, lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise, or in some cases, more advanced heart therapies.

A galloping heart rhythm should not be ignored. By recognizing the signs and seeking timely medical attention, you can take charge of your heart health and help ensure a steady, healthy beat for years to come.
