Due to our current lifestyle and dietary habits, constipation has become quite common. Nutritionist Rashi Chowdhary recognized the severity of the issue when she posted an Instagram reel hinting at a recipe to relieve constipation. “22,000 people wanted to know this recipe to poop right,” Chowdhary claimed. But what is this miracle remedy?

According to Chowdhary, combining ½ cup prune juice or 3-4 prunes soaked overnight (blended with water), a dash of lemon juice, black salt, soaked chia seeds, and ½ cup soda water can provide quick relief.

Before we explore the effectiveness of this remedy, let’s understand constipation.

When a person is constipated, their bowel movements are infrequent or difficult to pass. “Constipation often leads to the stool becoming hard and dry, making it challenging to eliminate,” explained Dr. Aniket Mule, consultant internal medicine at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road.

If left untreated, chronic constipation can lead to severe complications such as dehydration, bowel obstruction, or even fainting spells while on the toilet. “It serves as a reminder that proper hydration, dietary fiber intake, and physical activity are crucial elements in maintaining good digestive health,” said Dr. Mule.

Dr. HP Bharathi, deputy chief medical officer at Jindal Naturecure Institute, noted that the fiber and sorbitol found in prunes and prune juice can help induce bowel movements. “Rich in soluble fiber, soaked chia seeds help ease constipation and improve digestion. Black salt may act as a mild laxative, and the carbonation in soda water might stimulate digestion. The acidity and vitamin C from lime juice can also aid digestion,” said Dr. Bharathi.

While some people may find this remedy effective, individual reactions can vary. “To prevent constipation from worsening, it’s important to drink enough water while consuming more fiber,” urged Dr. Bharathi.

Moderation is crucial, as consuming too much of certain components, like sorbitol in prunes, can cause diarrhea and bloating, Dr. Bharathi warned. “Before using this remedy, anyone with specific dietary restrictions or medical conditions should consult a healthcare provider. Overall, maintaining regular bowel movements and avoiding constipation requires a balanced diet high in fiber, water, and physical exercise,” concluded Dr. Bharathi.
