WITHOUT directly criticizing the Yogi Adityanath government or the Centre, Rahul Gandhi, the newly appointed Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, emphasized all the Congress party’s key concerns during his first visit to his constituency, Raebareli, after winning the election there.

Gandhi’s itinerary included stops at a Hanuman temple, the Shaheed Smarak, the residence of late Captain Anshuman Singh, and the local AIIMS, whose foundation stone was laid by his mother, former Raebareli MP Sonia Gandhi. Each stop was purposeful and aimed at specific objectives.

His visit, following recent BJP protests in Parliament and elsewhere over his remarks involving the party and Hindus, began with prayers at the Hanuman temple in Raebareli’s Churva area, where he was filmed reciting the Hanuman Chalisa amidst local attention and posters questioning his religious affiliation.

Another significant visit was to the family of Captain Singh, who tragically lost his life in a fire at Siachen last year. Although Gandhi did not speak publicly about the meeting, Singh’s mother expressed gratitude to him for honoring the family and mentioned discussions about the Agnipath scheme, highlighting issues pertinent to Gandhi’s critiques of the BJP government.

His visit to the Shaheed Smarak, a memorial commemorating farmers who died in a 1921 protest, underscored his and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s campaign references to the family’s longstanding connection with Raebareli and their support for farmers.

The AIIMS in Raebareli, a project close to the Gandhi family, was another focal point of his visit. Gandhi accused the Modi government of obstructing the project’s progress and visited hospital wards, met with patients, and discussed the institution’s development with administrators and students.

Later, Gandhi reportedly held discussions with officials overseeing local infrastructure projects, including roads and bridges, without divulging specific details to the media.

Overall, Gandhi’s visit to Raebareli strategically addressed key issues while avoiding direct confrontations, aligning with his new role as Leader of the Opposition in Parliament.
