Goa welcomed over 10 million travelers in the 2023-24 tourist season, with foreign tourist arrivals increasing by 150%.
Goa Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte said that Goa's appeal among international travellers extended beyond its beaches as during the monsoon season, when beaches are inaccessible, there was an impressive 80% occupancy rate witnessed by hoteliers.
Goa Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte announced on June 16 that tourist arrivals in Goa surged during the recently concluded season, surpassing pre-COVID levels with over 1 crore visitors. He emphasized a notable 150% rise in international tourist numbers despite competition from other Indian states and global tourist destinations.
“While Goa faces competition from other states and international destinations, our tourist season remains robust, with significant occupancy rates even during the monsoon,” Khaunte was quoted as saying by PTI.
He further elaborated that Goa’s appeal among international travelers extended beyond its beaches. During the monsoon season, when beaches are inaccessible, hoteliers reported an impressive 80% occupancy rate. He noted that tourists have been seeking diverse experiences such as waterfalls and rural tourism options across the state.
He addressed concerns about competition from neighboring states and outlined Goa’s strategy to explore new markets and implement a vision document aimed at enhancing the state’s tourism sector. He emphasized the need for active participation from all stakeholders.
Khaunte acknowledged challenges, including the affordability of tourism during the peak season in December. He expressed intentions to negotiate with airlines and hotels to stabilize costs during extended weekends and the festive period.
Lastly, Khaunte said, “The monsoon is about waterfalls, lush green villages, forests, rural tourism. Monsoon is about going on nature trails. Tourists visit villages and realise Goa is much more than its beaches. This also helps to boost the rural economy.”
Meanwhile, as summer peaked across the country and many states experienced a heatwave, thousands of tourists flocked to Goa’s sun-kissed beaches ahead of the monsoon season closure.
